Superworms, Zophobas Morio, are beetle larvae highly appreciated as live food for exotic animals, they are available even in the small size.
It is advisable to administer in moderation as they are rich in fat, furthermore the adult larvae have a high percentage of chitin, making them slow to digest.

With its 5-6cm length, the superworms is a big larva suitable for feeding:

  • Medium-large reptiles (chameleons, bearded dragon, box turtles, large lizards, geckos, etc.)
  • Adult amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders, etc.)

  • Mammals (Suricata, hedgehogs, sugar gliders etc.)
  • Large fish, they can also be used as live bait for freshwater fishing;
  • Birds (birds of prey, corvids, etc.).

Superworms represent a perfect nutritious choice, in fact they generally boast a composition of:

  • Protein 20.70% (15 g per 100g), fat 32.80% (13.8 g per 100g), calcium 0.11% (100-150mg per 100g), fiber 3.71 g, carbohydrates 0.87 g , phosphorus 0.77%.

These larvae cannot tolerate high humidity and the ideal temperature to keep them healthy by slowing down the metamorphosis into pupa/cockroach is between 17°C and 19°C. It is not recommended to provide the beetles as food which, unlike the larvae, do not have a great nutritional value.

It is very important to remember that: "The better the feeder insects are fed, the more complete the nutrition of your exotic animals will be".

Superworms are resistant and simple to maintain insects. Once you have received them, let them acclimatise and prepare a large tank for them with a substrate composed of cereal flours (bran, polenta flour, crumbled bread). If you can, insert an egg carton to allow them to move freely without all the insects weighing on the same surface at the bottom;
To feed them, all you need to do is provide them with potatoes and carrots which will guarantee the correct water supply.

It is not recommended to cover the tank with a lid as the humidity would not be beneficial to the larvae, do not worry about any escapes as they are not able to climb on smooth surfaces.
