Dendrobaena veneta – The versatile earthworm for fishing, breeding, and animal nutrition

Available in convenient packs of 30 pieces.

WARNING: Upon receiving shipments, place the packages containing insects in a room at a moderate temperature (max 20°C) for a couple of hours before opening them. This allows the insects to adapt to the temperature change. Below these temperatures, they may appear sluggish—give them time to acclimate before transferring them.

The size of the insects delivered will correspond as closely as possible to the specified range, with a small tolerance of a few millimeters. As they are living creatures with rapid and variable growth, it is unfortunately not possible to measure each one individually, but we will do our best to accommodate any special requests. If in doubt, we recommend ordering mixed sizes.

Also known as the red worm or Verona worm, this species is increasingly valued both as fishing bait and as a natural food source for exotic animals such as reptiles, amphibians, insectivorous birds, and fish. It is an epigeic earthworm, meaning it lives in the upper layers of soil and feeds on decomposing organic matter—leaves, grass, and plant waste—thus contributing to nutrient recycling and improving soil fertility, making it a valuable ally for your plants as well!

It is a medium-to-large-sized worm, measuring between 2 and 16 cm in length and 3 to 7 mm in diameter. Its body is segmented, with a pointed head and a more rounded tail end. The coloration is generally reddish or pinkish-gray with striping, and the tail often shows a cream or pale yellow tip. These features, combined with its firm texture and resilience, make it ideal for various uses.

This earthworm is extremely rich in protein (up to 62%), amino acids, and minerals such as iron, zinc, manganese, and selenium, while maintaining a low fat content (around 16%). These values make it a highly nutritious and easily digestible food, perfect for carnivorous and omnivorous animals.

Ideal for your lizards, geckos, small snakes such as the worm snake, terrestrial and aquatic turtles, frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, axolotls, blackbirds, robins, thrushes, starlings, roosters, hens, ducks, lapwings, herons, seagulls, quails, insectivorous birds in general, moles, hedgehogs, shrews, cichlids, catfish, perch, trout, carp, and more — it is also perfect for fishing and is among the most appreciated worms by sport anglers. Their bright red color naturally attracts fish, while their elastic and durable texture makes them easy to hook without breaking during casting. They are ideal for trout, catfish, and other freshwater species, suitable for both beginners and professionals thanks to their versatility and vitality in water.

This species is easy to breed and store, requiring only a moist, cool substrate. In addition to its nutritional value, Dendrobaena worms help reduce organic waste and produce natural humus, representing an ecological and sustainable solution.

It is recommended to store the containers in the refrigerator if you do not wish to breed them.
