The MULCH version of this terrarium substrate, made from coconut shells, is ideal for reptiles, amphibians, and tortoises that live in humid environments typical of tropical forests, but it is also suitable for other similar habitats. It simply needs to be rehydrated before use.

The brick has a 4:1 compression ratio and a residual moisture content of 20%.

Quantity

It is a substrate made from the outer shell of the coconut; in this variant it consists of 100% cocochip, larger flakes compared to the FINE version, obtained by cutting the shell into pieces of about half a centimeter and compressing them into practical bricks. The result is a lightweight, highly porous humus that is easy to distribute inside the terrarium. In addition to offering excellent absorption and moisture retention, the material is sterilized before compression to eliminate seeds, fungi, insect eggs, and other potential pathogens, while also helping to reduce unpleasant odors.

Preparing the humus is very simple: just place the brick in a sufficiently large container and pour in about 3 liters of water, adjusting the amount based on the desired moisture level. The material will expand in about thirty minutes, during which it is helpful to stir it occasionally; once it reaches the ideal consistency, it can be transferred into the terrarium. Over the following days, it will gradually begin to dry out, and when needed, it will be enough to add water or lightly mist it with a spray bottle to restore the initial humidity. Once it has finished its use as a substrate, the humus can be reused as compost for plants and flowers or disposed of as organic waste.
