Springtails size: 1-2 mm
The S dose contains several hundred individuals, the M dose contains double that.
We recommend:
- Temperature: 22/28°
- Humidity: 70/80%
- The S dose is useful as a starter colony for a basic 30x30 terrarium; the M dose is recommended for a 45x45cm. They can be used effectively for the care of incubated eggs!
Springtails are indispensable scavengers for high humidity terrariums, very useful in your isopod colonies as they feed on any decomposing organic substance, mold, debris and fungi, transforming them into precious humus, keeping your terrarium clean and fresh and regulating the proliferation of mites.
They really like dry foods used in aquariums, otherwise it is possible to supplement their diet with Collembolafix Springtail Food.
Their ideal substrate is composed of Breeding substrate for springtails?, coconut fiber, dry leaves and moss to which you can add pieces of charcoal.
Our advice: together with an isopod colony, springtails will colonize your humid terrarium, and being detritivores, they will help keep the substrate clean by feeding on waste and even on your terrarium inhabitants’ droppings!
When your portion of tropical springtails arrives, it will contain a piece of substrate with eggs, adults, and juveniles. We recommend misting it once with water and placing the substrate as it is in a humid area of your terrarium without mixing it in. This way, you’ll give the springtails the chance to colonize the terrarium at their own pace. Over the following weeks, check their progress by peeking under water bowls, pieces of bark, and stones—these will be the first places where you’ll spot the adults!
If you purchase multiple portions, you’ll speed up the process: place them in different areas of the substrate!
